TROPICAL CYCLONE ALERT STATEMENT
WHCA31 TAPA
TROPICAL STORM BERYL ALERT STATEMENT ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA METEOROLOGICAL SERVICES 11:15 AM ECT SATURDAY JUL 7, 2018
THIS IS FOR THE LEEWARD ISLANDS AND BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS …BERYL WEAKENS TO A TROPICAL STORM…
AT 1100 AM AST (1500 UTC), THE CENTER OF TROPICAL STORM BERYL WAS LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 12.1 NORTH, LONGITUDE 51.1 WEST OR 740 NORTICAL MILES EAST-SOUTHEAST OF ST. KITTS AND NEVIS, 788 MILES EAST-SOUTHEAST OF ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA AND 998 MILES EAST-SOUTHEAST OF THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS.
BERYL IS MOVING TOWARD THE WEST-NORTHWEST NEAR 14 MPH (22 KM/H). A WEST-NORTHWESTWARD MOTION WITH SOME INCREASE IN FORWARD SPEED IS EXPECTED DURING THE NEXT FEW DAYS. ON THE FORECAST TRACK, THE CENTER OF BERYL WILL CROSS THE ISLAND CHAIN LATE SUNDAY OR MONDAY AND MOVE SOUTH OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS ON MONDAY.
MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS HAVE DECREASED TO NEAR 65 MPH (100 KM/H) WITH HIGHER GUSTS. ADDITIONAL WEAKENING IS FORECAST DURING THE NEXT 48 HRS, ESPECIALLY ONCE BERYL REACHES THE EASTERN CARIBBEAN SEA ON MONDAY. THIS SYSTEM COULD DEGENERATE INTO AN OPEN TROUGH BY THE TIME IT REACHES THE CENTRAL CARIBBEAN SEA AND HISPANIOLA ON TUESDAY.
ST. KITTS AND NEVIS IS NOT UNDER ANY WATCHES OR WARNING AT THIS MOMENT
BERYL IS A TROPICAL STORM WITH TROPICAL STORM-FORCE WINDS EXTENDING OUTWARD UP TO 35 MILES (55 KM) FROM THE CENTER.
THE ESTIMATED MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE IS 999 MB (29.50 INCHES).
BASED ON THE LATEST TRACK, BERYL IS EXPECTED TO MAINTAIN A WEST TO WEST-NORTHWESTERLY TRACK WHICH COULD RESULT IN THE STORM PASSING SOUTH OF THE LEEWARD ISLANDS. HOWEVER, GIVEN THE UNCERTAINTY IN THE FORECAST TRACK, THERE IS STILL A POSSIBILITY THAT BERYL COULD TRACK CLOSER TO THE LEEWARD ISLANDS AND IN THAT CASE WATCHES OR WARNINGS MAY BE REQUIRED WITHIN THE NEXT 24 HOURS FOR PORTIONS OF THE LEEWARD ISLANDS.
RESIDENTS OF THE LEEWARDS AND BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS SHOULD CONTINUE TO CLOSELY MONITOR THE PROGRESS OF BERYL AND FUTURE UPDATES FROM THE MET OFFICE FOR ANY SIGNIFICANT CHANGES.
REPEAT….. ST. KITTS AND NEVIS IS NOT UNDER ANY WATCHES OR WARNING AT THIS MOMENT
THE NEXT SCHEDULED ADVISORY WILL BE AROUND 5:00 PM (ECT) FORECASTER
